Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković has reportedly decided to recall Youcef Belaïli for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Botswana and Mozambique on March 21 and 25.
This marks a potential turning point for the winger, who has been absent from the national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Espérance de Tunis forward received a pre-selection call-up on Tuesday, with strong indications that he will be included in the final squad list.
If confirmed, this would be the first time Petković has called up Belaïli since taking charge of the Greens in February 2024.
Belaïli’s return to international duty
Belaïli’s omission from the national team over the past year had sparked widespread debate among Algerian football fans.
Known for his technical skill and creativity, the 32-year-old remains a popular figure despite past disciplinary issues that have complicated his international career.
His potential return comes after recent remarks by Algerian Football Federation (FAF) communications officer Saïd Fellak, who hinted that the door remained open for a recall.
However, speculation grew when Saïd Benrahma, a direct competitor for Belaïli’s left-wing position, was also reportedly under consideration for the squad.
A second chance under Petković
Belaïli’s inclusion would signal a fresh start under Petković, who has been reshaping the national team since replacing Djamel Belmadi.
The veteran winger’s experience and attacking flair could prove valuable as Algeria looks to strengthen its position in Group G of the World Cup qualifiers.
For Belaïli himself, a return to international duty would be a moment of redemption.

Having previously played a crucial role in Algeria’s AFCON 2019 triumph and World Cup qualifying campaigns, he now has an opportunity to re-establish himself within the squad.
Algeria awaits final squad announcement
The final squad list for the qualifiers is eagerly anticipated, with Algerian supporters keen to see whether Belaïli’s name will officially feature.
Given his reputation and the national team’s need for attacking depth, his return could provide a much-needed boost as Algeria aims to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
