Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye has opened up on the reasons behind his departure from Olympique de Marseille to join Villarreal on a free transfer.

In an interview with L’Équipe, Gueye revealed that the desire for consistent playing time and the influence of Villarreal coach Marcelino were key factors in his decision.

Despite efforts by Marseille to extend his contract, the 26-year-old opted for a fresh challenge.

“I had several possibilities, including OM, but I was coming off a season where I hadn’t played much.

I needed to find a project where I would have playing time, especially at my age,” Gueye explained.

The 2023-2024 campaign had been challenging for the Senegalese international, with just 15 Ligue 1 appearances. Determined to rediscover his form, he sought a club where he could secure regular minutes.

Marcelino and Bailly’s Influence

Gueye’s connection with Marcelino, who briefly coached Marseille, played a significant role in his move.

The Spanish coach had expressed his admiration for the midfielder despite his limited game time at OM.

“When he left, the coach told me that he had really appreciated the player, the man, and the state of mind that I had shown,” Gueye recalled.

Former Marseille teammate Eric Bailly, who previously played for Villarreal, also encouraged Gueye to join the Spanish outfit.

The move appears to be paying off, with Gueye making 25 appearances and scoring three goals for Villarreal.

The club currently sits fifth in La Liga with 44 points after 25 matches, as the midfielder enjoys a resurgence in form.
