Mohamed Zougrana has officially switched international allegiance to Burkina Faso after FIFA approved his request for a change of sporting nationality.
The MC Alger midfielder, who previously represented Ivory Coast at youth levels, has now been called up to the Burkinabe national team for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Djibouti and Guinea-Bissau.
A strategic decision amid Ivory Coast’s intense competition
Zougrana, 23, was born and raised in Ivory Coast, progressing through the ranks of ASEC Mimosas, one of the country’s most prestigious clubs.
However, despite his talent, breaking into the Ivorian senior national team, which won the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), proved challenging due to the high level of competition in midfield.
The midfielder, who has Burkinabe heritage, opted to represent Burkina Faso, where his chances of regular international football appear more promising.
His decision was strongly supported by former Stallions coach Hubert Velud, who worked closely with Aristide Bancé, the national team’s general manager, to accelerate FIFA’s approval process.
Although Velud has since been replaced by Brama Traoré, the move remains a significant boost for Burkina Faso’s squad.
Zougrana set to miss MC Alger’s crucial derby against USM Alger
While Zougrana’s international call-up is a personal triumph, it comes at a cost for MC Alger.
The midfielder will miss the highly anticipated Algiers derby against rivals USM Alger, scheduled during the FIFA international window between March 17 and 25.
His absence will be a blow for MC Alger, who are currently in the hunt for the Algerian league title.
Zougrana has been an integral part of the club’s midfield this season, providing both defensive stability and attacking support.
A fresh chapter with the stallions
For Burkina Faso, the addition of Zougrana strengthens their squad as they aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With Djibouti and Guinea-Bissau next on their schedule, the Stallions will be looking to capitalize on their squad depth and secure crucial points in the qualifying campaign.
Zougrana now joins a growing list of players who have opted to switch allegiances in African football, reflecting the increasing strategic considerations players take when choosing their international careers.
His debut for Burkina Faso will be closely watched as he embarks on this new chapter with the Stallions.
