Uncertain future for André Onana as Rúben Amorim plans Manchester United overhaul

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana could be among the high-profile departures in the summer, as manager Rúben Amorim signals major squad changes at Old Trafford.

With the club enduring a difficult season, the Portuguese coach has hinted that players who are not fully committed or underperforming may be shown the exit door.

Onana’s struggles at Manchester United

Since his €52.5 million move from Inter Milan in July 2023, Onana has faced a turbulent spell at United.

His first season was marked by inconsistent performances, particularly in the Champions League group stage, where costly errors contributed to the club’s early elimination.

While his form improved as the season progressed, questions remain about his long-term future as the club’s No.1 goalkeeper.

Now, with United struggling in the Premier League and Amorim looking to rebuild the squad, Onana’s position is under scrutiny.

Reports suggest the Red Devils may be open to selling the Cameroonian international if a suitable offer arrives.

Amorim’s message: “The door is open”

Speaking about the squad’s future, Amorim did not mention specific names but made it clear that changes are coming:

“In football, sometimes you stay, sometimes you have to leave. If a player wants to go, the door is open. The most important thing is the team and the future of the club.”

His statement has fueled speculation that several key figures, including Onana, Marcus Rashford, and others, could be on their way out as the club seeks a fresh start.

Will United sell Onana?

Despite his undeniable talent, Onana has not entirely convinced fans and management that he is the long-term solution in goal.

With financial fair play (FFP) concerns and the need for reinforcements in other areas, United could decide to cash in on the 27-year-old if an offer in the region of €40-50 million arrives.

Potential replacements have already been linked to the club, including Diogo Costa (FC Porto) and Mike Maignan (AC Milan), suggesting that United may be considering a change in the goalkeeping department.

What next for Onana?

With the season still ongoing, Onana has a chance to prove his worth and help United fight for the FA Cup and Europa League titles.

However, his future remains uncertain, and if Amorim decides to move in a different direction, the Cameroonian shot-stopper could be one of the big names leaving Old Trafford this summer.
