Assane Diao’s Senegal decision sparks panic in Spain

Spanish-Senegalese forward Assane Diao has admitted that his impressive start at Como has taken him by surprise after joining the Italian club from Real Betis in the January transfer window.

The young forward has quickly settled into life in Serie A, delivering strong performances that have made an immediate impact.

The Ndongane, Senegal-born has scored five goals in eight games in the Italian top flight.

Diao’s decision to join Como was heavily influenced by manager Cesc Fàbregas, who personally outlined the club’s ambitions and how the forward fit into their long-term vision.

The 19-year-old expressed his confidence in the project and how crucial his conversation with Fàbregas was in finalizing his move.

“I didn’t expect to start this well,” Diao told Como’s website.

“Of course, it’s what I wanted and hoped for, but I was aware that I was stepping into a tough league and that the first steps would be difficult. However, thanks to my teammates and the coaching staff, I was able to adapt very quickly.

“Why Como? I spoke with (coach Cesc) Fabregas, who explained the project, the vision, and what he had in mind for me and for the proper development of the team.

“Speaking directly with him was very important; after that conversation, I had no more doubts and chose Como.

With his early form exceeding expectations, Diao is quickly becoming a key player in Como’s push for promotion, showing the qualities that made him a standout talent at Betis.
