Mohamed Salah has acknowledged that he and his Liverpool teammates have struggled with the pressure of leading the Premier League title race in previous seasons, allowing doubt to creep in despite holding a strong position at the top of the table.
The Egyptian forward played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, scoring the opener and assisting Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal.
With the win, Liverpool extended their lead at the Premier League summit, now sitting 11 points clear of Arsenal. The Gunners had suffered a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to West Ham United on Saturday, further strengthening Liverpool’s grip on the title race.
However, Salah issued a word of caution despite their advantage. “Hopefully we keep calm because sometimes the pressure gets to us. We try to win each game.”
Liverpool found themselves in a similar position last season, leading the league at this stage with just one point fewer than their current tally.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side faltered in the final stretch, dropping ten points in their last 11 games and ultimately finishing third behind Manchester City and Arsenal.
Since the Premier League’s inception 33 years ago, Liverpool have only lifted the trophy once, during the 2019/20 campaign.
“We need another title,” Salah admitted after Sunday’s convincing victory. “Me and the big guys in the team, we need another title.”
Liverpool will aim to maintain their momentum when they host Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday.
