Trevoh Chalobah will miss Chelsea’s Premier League fixture against Southampton on Tuesday after sustaining an injury during the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed the defender’s absence during his pre-match press conference on Monday.
Injury setback for Chelsea
Chalobah, 25, was forced off the pitch early in Saturday’s match against Villa after suffering an upper-body injury.
Following medical assessments over the weekend, the club has determined that he will be sidelined for at least a week, ruling him out of Chelsea’s crucial home fixture against Southampton.
Maresca expressed disappointment over losing another key player but was relieved the injury was not more severe.
Trevoh had a check-up on Sunday, and he will be out for about a week to ten days, Maresca told reporters.
On the one hand, it’s good that it’s not a serious injury, but on the other hand, it’s a shame because we lose another player to injury.
He won’t play against Southampton, but we’ll see how he progresses for the next game.
Chelsea’s growing injury concerns
Chalobah’s absence adds to Chelsea’s ongoing injury struggles, with several first-team players already sidelined.
The Blues are currently without Nicolas Jackson, Wesley Fofana, Noni Madueke, and Benoît Badiashile, leaving Maresca with limited options as he looks to get the team back to winning ways.
With Chelsea in search of vital points in the Premier League, the absence of key defensive figures will be a concern for Maresca as his side prepares to face Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues will be hoping for a quick recovery for Chalobah and the rest of their injured players as they aim to finish the season strongly.
