Real Madrid defender David Alaba has expressed pride in his long-awaited return to LaLiga action during Saturday’s 2-0 triumph over Girona.
The 32-year-old, making his first league start of the season after recovering from an ACL injury, anchored Los Blancos’ defense in a dominant display that earned them a vital victory.
The versatile Austrian international of Nigerian descent, who previously featured as a substitute in three Champions League group-stage matches this term, played 78 minutes before being substituted to a standing ovation at the Santiago Bernabéu.
“It’s a very important win for us. We’re happy and we’re enjoying a good spell. (Luka) Modrić’s goal was incredible. He’s a very important player for us on and off the pitch, he’s a legend and a great person.
“I’m delighted after so long out injured. I was ready to start.
”We work together and when we do so, we’re really good. We’re dangerous up front and we know it. We’ve defended very well together.”
The victory solidified Madrid’s hold on second place, trailing leaders Barcelona on goal difference.
Alaba’s return bolsters a backline as his return is timely for the club that is dealing with a lot of injury crisis.
