Ademola Lookman looks set to leave Atalanta at the end of the season, with speculation mounting over his next move following public criticism from head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
The Nigerian forward came under scrutiny after missing a crucial penalty in Atalanta’s 3-1 defeat to FC Bruges in the Champions League play-offs.
While supporters rallied behind him, Gasperini did not hold back in his post-match comments, fuelling uncertainty over Lookman’s long-term future at the club.
Gasperini’s criticism and Lookman’s response
Speaking after the loss, Gasperini openly criticized Lookman’s decision to take the penalty.
“He’s the worst penalty taker I’ve ever had,” the Atalanta boss said, expressing his frustration over the missed opportunity.
Lookman had only just returned from injury, scoring within seconds of coming on as a substitute before failing to convert from the spot. The 26-year-old later took to social media to share his disappointment at being singled out.
Being singled out like I was hurts me and makes me feel like I’m not respected when I give my all every day to bring success to this club and its incredible supporters,” he wrote.
The person who was designated to take the penalties asked me to do so, and I took responsibility to help my team.
Gasperini later attempted to clarify his remarks, insisting he did not intend to offend the player.
I didn’t want to offend anyone. But I would have preferred Ademola to leave the penalty to Charles (De Ketelaere),” he said.
Departure already in motion
Despite the recent fallout, Lookman’s departure had already been in the works before the penalty incident.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the forward had requested to leave last summer, but Atalanta opted to keep him while allowing Teun Koopmeiners to move to Juventus.
With his contract running until June 2026, Atalanta now faces a crucial decision.
The club is expected to sell Lookman this summer to avoid losing him for a reduced fee later.
Valued at over €50 million, the forward is one of Atalanta’s most bankable assets.
Premier League return on the cards?
Lookman’s performances this season—15 goals and seven assists in 28 appearances—have put him on the radar of several top European clubs.
Paris Saint-Germain had previously shown interest, but with their focus now on signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for €70 million, a move to France appears unlikely.
A return to England could be a more realistic option for the London-born forward. Arsenal, who have suffered several attacking injuries in recent weeks, are reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Lookman is set to attract significant interest, and Atalanta may have little choice but to cash in on their in-demand forward.
