Algerian FA provides clarity on Rayan Cherki and Maghnes Akliouche’s international futures

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed it has made every effort to secure the international allegiance of dual nationals Rayan Cherki and Maghnes Akliouche but insists the final decision now lies with the players.

With the March international window approaching, speculation has grown around the futures of the Lyon playmaker Cherki, 21, and Monaco midfielder Akliouche, 22, both of whom are eligible to represent Algeria despite being capped at youth level for France.

FAF communications officer Saïd Fellak addressed the situation, making it clear that the federation has laid out its case to the two highly-rated talents and is now awaiting their decisions.

“We’ve Done Our Part” – FAF Awaits Response

Speaking to local media, Fellak explained that the FAF has presented its vision and future plans to both Cherki and Akliouche, underlining the opportunity they have to be part of Algeria’s footballing project.

“We presented the project to them, explained our vision, and gave all the guarantees. Now the decision is theirs. We are not putting any pressure on them,” said Fellak.

Despite the FAF’s proactive approach, there has been no definitive response from either player.

The situation remains in flux, with both Cherki and Akliouche weighing their options amid the competitive landscape of international football.

Recent comments by France head coach Didier Deschamps may influence their thinking. Deschamps highlighted the depth of talent in the French national team, acknowledging the difficulty young players face in breaking into the senior squad.

This could potentially sway Cherki and Akliouche to consider Algeria as a more immediate avenue for international football.

Fans Grow Impatient Amid Lingering Uncertainty

While the FAF has maintained a patient stance, some Algerian supporters have expressed frustration over the prolonged decision-making process.

Social media platforms have seen a wave of humorous posts and memes reflecting the impatience of fans eager to see the dual nationals commit to the Fennecs.

The slow progress has fueled debate within the Algerian football community, with some calling for a focus on players who show clear commitment from the outset.

Praising Those Who Committed Early

In contrast to the indecision surrounding Cherki and Akliouche, Fellak took the opportunity to highlight young players who have fully embraced their Algerian heritage without hesitation.

He commended Ibrahim Maza, Amin Chiakha, and Mohamed Farsi—dual nationals who chose Algeria early in their careers despite interest from other national federations.

“It’s rare to see a young man decide at 18 about his international future. Maza, for example, was a priority for the German federation, but he chose Algeria without hesitation,” Fellak noted.

The message from the FAF is clear: while the door remains open for Cherki and Akliouche, the federation values players who make a firm and early commitment to the national team.

FAF Focused on Long-Term Vision

As Algeria continues to build for future competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers, the FAF remains committed to strengthening the squad with top talent, both domestic and international.

However, the federation is also keen to avoid becoming entangled in prolonged recruitment sagas.

“We will not run after those who hesitate,” Fellak emphasized, reaffirming the FAF’s respect for players’ individual choices while focusing on building a cohesive and committed national team.

For now, the ball is firmly in the court of Cherki and Akliouche as Algerian fans and officials await their decisions in the weeks ahead.
