Real Madrid forward, Vinícius Júnior, responded emphatically to Manchester City supporters following their team’s 6-3 aggregate victory in the Champions League.
The Brazilian, who is said to have Cameroonian heritage, was particularly motivated by a banner displayed by City fans during the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.
The banner featured an image of City’s midfielder, Rodri Hernández, kissing the Ballon d’Or trophy, accompanied by the phrase “Stop crying your heart out,” a nod to the Oasis song.
This display was a jibe at Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony after learning that Vinícius would not be the recipient.
Although the banner was reportedly aimed at Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Pérez, Vinícius took it personally.
He admitted that it served as extra motivation, leading him to provide two assists in the first leg, which ended in a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid.
Following the decisive second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Real Madrid secured their spot in the next round, Vinícius took to social media.
He posted “Okay okay okay!!!!!!!” accompanied by a crying face emoji, a clear reference to the earlier taunt from City fans.
Manchester City supporters had also unveiled a smaller banner with the same theme during the second leg in Madrid.
However, their enthusiasm waned as the match progressed, especially after Kylian Mbappé completed his hat-trick, prompting some fans to leave the stadium early.
