Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set his sights on becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, aiming to leave an enduring legacy with the Soweto giants.
In a recent Nedbank Cup match at Orlando Stadium, Mabasa delivered a remarkable performance by netting a hat-trick against Baroka FC, securing a 3-1 victory for the Buccaneers and advancing them to the quarter-finals.
This feat elevated his season tally to 12 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
Notably, it was his second hat-trick of the season, the first occurring during an 8-1 Betway Premiership triumph over Marumo Gallants.
With these accomplishments, Mabasa has amassed a total of 44 goals in 208 appearances for Orlando Pirates, accompanied by 10 assists.
This achievement propels him to second place on the club’s all-time leading scorers list, surpassing legends Phumlani Mkhize and the late Lesley Manyathela, who each recorded 41 goals.
He now trails only Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi, who holds the record with 58 goals.
Reflecting on his pursuit of the record, Mabasa stated: “It’s definitely something I’m aiming for.
I pride myself on the chances I create and the goals I score. To leave a legacy at this club that I’ve supported since I was a child would be a great honour.”
Mabasa’s journey with Orlando Pirates has been marked by significant milestones.
He clinched the PSL Golden Boot, known as the Lesley Manyathela Award, last season by netting 16 goals in 26 matches.
It’s noteworthy that six of these goals were scored during his tenure with Moroka Swallows before rejoining Pirates mid-season.
Manyathela had previously secured the same accolade in the 2001/02 season, recording 18 league goals and a total of 21 across all competitions.
Expressing admiration for Manyathela, Mabasa remarked: “He’s a player I wish the country had seen more of.
It’s unfortunate what happened; may his soul rest in peace. He was one of the best strikers this club has ever had. To be mentioned alongside him is an honour.”
Looking ahead, Orlando Pirates are set to face SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals, aiming to defend their title for a third consecutive season
. Mabasa’s exceptional form and determination to etch his name in the club’s history books will undoubtedly be pivotal as the Buccaneers strive for continued success.
As Mabasa inches closer to Vilakazi’s longstanding record, his focus remains on contributing to the team’s achievements while solidifying his status as one of Orlando Pirates’ most prolific strikers.
The upcoming fixtures present an opportunity for Mabasa to further showcase his goal-scoring prowess and inch closer to becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Fans and football enthusiasts alike will be keenly observing Mabasa’s performances, anticipating whether he can surpass Vilakazi’s record and cement his legacy within the storied history of Orlando Pirates.
His dedication, combined with his impressive track record, positions him as a key figure in the club’s pursuit of glory in both domestic and continental competitions.
