The Algerian national football team, led by coach Djamel Belmadi, received an unexpected twist as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled the provisional lists for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
This premature disclosure by CAF, featuring 50 names instead of the permitted 55, has laid bare the anticipated roster that Belmadi had intended to unveil in a more controlled manner after reaching Togo with his squad.
Despite the initial intention to maintain suspense, the published list of 27 players became easily recognizable, given its logical order with customary jersey numbers. As anticipated by Belmadi months ago, the core team members, including goalkeepers Mandré, Zeghba, and Benbot, will make the journey.
However, the surprise inclusion of four goalkeepers, including Raïs M’Bolhi, suggests a strategic choice by the coach.
The CAF revelation also confirms the presence of key players such as Youcef Belaïli, donning his favored number 8 jersey, and the return of ‘Adam Zorgan.
Notably, the absence of Abdelkahar Kadri from the final 27, despite being among the initial 50, marks a significant decision by Belmadi.
Despite Houssem Aouar’s recent injury with Roma, the midfielder remains part of the squad, indicating the coach’s confidence in his swift recovery before the tournament. The possibility of substituting an injured player up to 24 hours before the first match, subject to CAF Medical Commission approval, offers flexibility in managing Aouar’s participation.
Other notable inclusions are Niçois Badreddine Bouanani, currently sidelined due to injury, and Djamel Benlamri, who has faced challenges at MCA. Surprisingly, players previously considered on the fringes, like Faouzi Ghoulam, Yacine Brahimi, and Amir Sayoud, make a comeback.

The provisional list, albeit featuring some surprise names, reflects Belmadi’s strategic choices and confidence in the team’s capabilities.
