Senegal’s Keita Baldé: How Monaco move altered his career trajectory

Keita Baldé’s career appeared destined for the top after a stellar rise at Lazio, but his 2017 move to AS Monaco proved to be a turning point that set him on an unpredictable path.

Once seen as one of football’s most exciting young talents, the Senegalese forward has since struggled to maintain consistency at the highest level.

A Promising Talent Takes an Unexpected Route

At just 21, Baldé was thriving in Serie A, showcasing his pace, skill, and finishing ability for Lazio. His performances attracted interest from Europe’s elite, but instead of securing a move to one of the continent’s biggest clubs, he opted for a €30 million switch to AS Monaco.

At the time, the move seemed logical—the French side had just won the Ligue 1 title and were competing in the Champions League.

However, despite a solid debut season with eight league goals, the forward soon grew unsettled and longed for a return to Italy.

A Career Marked by Uncertainty

In 2018, Inter Milan offered Baldé a loan move, providing him with the chance to revive his career in Serie A.

However, his return to Italy was underwhelming, producing just five goals in 29 appearances—far from convincing the Nerazzurri to make the deal permanent.

Upon returning to Monaco, he struggled for playing time and was sent on successive loans to Sampdoria, Cagliari, and Spartak Moscow.

None of these spells reignited his early promise. Stints at Espanyol and Sivasspor followed, further distancing him from the European spotlight.

A Final Attempt to Revive His Career

Now 29, Baldé finds himself at a critical juncture. Monza, a club battling for survival in Serie A, has been linked with a potential move—perhaps his last real chance to make an impact at a competitive level. His talent remains undeniable, but time is no longer on his side.

His last appearance for Senegal came on 7 June 2022 against Rwanda. Without a resurgence, a return to the national team, or even top-level football, may soon slip beyond reach.

Monza could represent his final opportunity to reclaim the career that once held such promise.
