A charity gala in Dakar will bring together football legends for a symbolic rematch between Senegal and France, echoing their historic 2002 World Cup encounter.
The event will take place from April 3 to 6, 2025, at the renovated Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, with the highlight match scheduled for April 5 at 4 p.m.
The initiative is spearheaded by former Senegalese internationals Gorgui Sy Dieng and Babacar Guèye, alongside ex-French international Frank Sylvestre.
The match will feature a team of Senegalese legends, including stars from the iconic 2002 squad, against a selection of football greats dubbed “Friends of Zidane and Ronaldinho.”
Honouring a Senegalese Hero
A poignant tribute will be paid to Pape Bouba Diop, the late Senegalese midfielder who scored the decisive goal in their famous 1-0 victory over reigning champions France in 2002
. Diop passed away in 2020, and his son, Aaron Diop, will have the honour of delivering the symbolic kick-off for the match.
The gala’s purpose extends beyond football. Proceeds will support two Senegalese charities, Empire des Enfants and Village des Rois, which work to aid vulnerable children and young people.
A Broader Cultural Program
The charity event will also include cultural activities, with participants visiting Gorée Island and the House of Slaves.
These visits aim to highlight Senegal’s rich history while fostering a deeper connection among the players and attendees.
As preparations continue, the newly renovated Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium is set to reopen in March, providing a fitting venue for this remarkable occasion.
The gala promises to unite football fans and legends while supporting meaningful causes, ensuring the legacy of the 2002 match lives on in both spirit and action.
