Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is rediscovering his form at Panathinaikos following a challenging adjustment period after his loan move from Olympique de Marseille.
The 24-year-old gained global recognition during the 2022 World Cup, where he was instrumental in Morocco’s historic journey to the semifinals.
However, after a $10-million transfer from Angers to Marseille, Ounahi struggled to secure playing time and slipped down the pecking order at the French club.
His lack of opportunities and a dip in confidence eventually led to a summer loan deal with Greek side Panathinaikos.
Reflecting on his struggles, Ounahi shared with French outlet Foot Mercato: “I’ve had difficult moments and a really hard transfer window. What happened will help me in life. This situation made me grow, and I don’t want to repeat the same mistakes. I’m determined to give me all to honour the club and get back to my best level.”
Initially, Ounahi’s start in the Greek Super League was far from smooth. However, the arrival of coach Rui Vitória in November marked a turning point for the playmaker.
His performances have since improved dramatically, highlighted by his man-of-the-match display against Atromitos on December 4, where he scored the decisive goal.
Just weeks later, he played a pivotal role in Panathinaikos’ Conference League victory over FK Dinamo Minsk, delivering a stunning assist.
“I’m a player who thrives on feeling valued and involved,” Ounahi told Foot Mercato.
“When I feel that love, I play my best football.”
Ounahi’s contract with Marseille runs until 2027, but Panathinaikos holds an option to make the move permanent.
With his recent resurgence, the Greek club is seriously considering activating the clause to secure the midfielder’s services long-term.
