Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acting Chief Executive Officer Patrick Korir has dismissed speculation that Benni McCarthy is set to become the next head coach of Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars.
The FKF is searching for a replacement for Engin Firat, who resigned on December 12, citing unpaid salary arrears.
Recent reports suggested that McCarthy, the South African football legend, was being considered as a frontrunner for the position.
McCarthy, who parted ways with Manchester United in July at the end of his contract, has been vocal about his desire to return to coaching.
Earlier this month, he revealed he had been interviewed by three unnamed Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs.
The 47-year-old’s unexpected link to the Kenya coaching job sparked rumors, with some speculating that FKF President Hussein Mohammed regarded McCarthy as the ideal candidate to lead the Harambee Stars.
Korir, however, clarified the situation, confirming that while McCarthy had applied for the role through his agent, no decision had been made regarding Firat’s successor.
“We have received many CVs, close to 20, from candidates who want to coach the Kenyan national team,” Korir told Al-Qahera News.
“Benni McCarthy is one of the coaches who applied for the job through his agent, and the technical committee is still studying them.
“The technical committee is looking for the best person suitable for the vacant position. This is entirely up to them.
I will wait until they reach my office with their preferred candidate, once the process is completed.”
The search for a new Harambee Stars coach comes at a critical time, with the national team aiming to rebuild and improve its performance on the international stage.
The FKF has emphasized that the selection process will be thorough, ensuring the chosen candidate aligns with the team’s long-term vision and objectives.
As speculation continues, FKF officials are urging patience from fans and stakeholders, reiterating that the technical committee will make a decision based on the merits of the candidates.
