Dennis Appiah provided a crucial assist, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Saint-Etienne from suffering a 2-1 defeat to Toulouse in Ligue 1 on Friday evening.
The French-born Ghanaian defender played the full 90 minutes and was solid at the back for his team. Saint-Etienne broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Lucas Stassin finished off a well-timed cross from Appiah with a left-footed strike from inside the box. However, Toulouse responded quickly, with Shavy Babicka heading home the equalizer just two minutes later.
Toulouse seized the advantage in the 85th minute when Zakaria Aboukhlal found the back of the net with a close-range header, assisted by Niklas Schmidt, to seal the win for the hosts.
Despite their defeat, Saint-Etienne showed resilience throughout the match, with Appiah’s assist being one of the highlights. The defeat leaves them with work to do as they prepare for their upcoming Coupe de France clash against Marseille on December 22.
Saint-Etienne’s head-to-head record against Toulouse remains strong, but they’ll be looking to bounce back from this setback.
