The Democratic Republic of Congo has announced a 24-player squad for their crucial double-header against Chad in the second preliminary round of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Local Leopards coach Otis Ngoma has selected a team entirely composed of players from domestic leagues, showcasing the depth of talent within the country.
Among the standout inclusions is Oscar Kabwit of TP Mazembe, who was recently called up to the senior national team. Also included are Ernest Luzolo and Sozé Zemanga, both TP Mazembe stalwarts, as well as goalkeeper Siadi Baggio, who featured in the Leopards’ squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without making an appearance.
Another notable inclusion is Maniema Union goalkeeper Brudel Efonge Liyongo, who has made a strong start to the season in the CAF Champions League.
Liyongo is joined by his club teammates Dieu Merci Lupini, Osé Ndombele, Joseph Bakasu, Agée Basiala, Jeancy Mboma Kinda, and Jephté Kitambala, forming a solid contingent from the Kisangani-based side.
The matches against Chad present an opportunity for the Leopards to reassert their dominance in CHAN, a competition exclusively featuring players who compete in their home countries. DR Congo has a storied history in the tournament, having won the title twice.
Coach Ngoma’s squad selection underscores the emphasis on blending experience with emerging talent, particularly from TP Mazembe and Maniema Union, two of the country’s leading clubs.
With less than ten days to prepare, the focus will be on building cohesion among the players and fine-tuning tactics ahead of the first leg.
The fixtures against Chad are critical, as a victory will secure DR Congo’s place in the CHAN finals, further solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in African football.
Fans will be watching closely as the Leopards aim to maintain their legacy in the competition and set the tone for a successful campaign.
