Guinea ends DR Congo’s unbeaten streak in dramatic 2025 AFCON qualifier

Guinea secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Saturday, ending the Leopards’ eight-match unbeaten run. Sehrou Guirassy’s stunning stoppage-time goal at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan sealed the win and reinforced Guinea’s position as serious contenders in Group H.

The Syli National dominated much of the match, applying relentless pressure and showcasing tactical superiority.

In contrast, DR Congo struggled to match their opponent’s intensity and commitment, falling short in both creativity and execution.

Guinea’s Tactical Mastery Outshines DR Congo

From the outset, Guinea controlled the tempo, employing a high press and precise short passes to disrupt DR Congo’s defensive structure.

The Guinean attackers, led by the prolific Sehrou Guirassy, tested the Leopards’ backline with a series of incisive runs and penetrating passes.

Despite resilient defending from Chancel Mbemba and his defensive partners Inonga Baka and Dimitri Bertaud, Guinea remained the more threatening side.

Guirassy, the top scorer in the qualifiers with six goals, was closely marked but continued to pose a constant threat.

His well-timed runs and intelligent movement created moments of panic for the Congolese defense, even as they managed to thwart him for most of the match.

Leopards Struggle to Gain Foothold

DR Congo, though defensively disciplined, failed to generate momentum in attack. The Leopards’ lack of creativity and cohesion in the final third left them unable to capitalize on their limited opportunities.

Substitutions, including the introductions of Mukau, Balikwisha, and Mbuku, added some balance to the midfield but failed to deliver the offensive spark needed to challenge Guinea’s dominance.

Guirassy Delivers in the Dying Moments

As the match seemed destined for a draw, Sehrou Guirassy delivered a moment of brilliance in the 93rd minute.

A pinpoint cross from the left found Guirassy, who executed a superb half-volley at the far post, leaving goalkeeper Bertaud with no chance.

The goal, Guirassy’s seventh of the qualifiers, highlighted why he remains one of the most feared strikers in African football.

Guinea coach Michel Dussuyer had praised his team’s resilience and focus before the match, and the late goal was a testament to their determination.

Meanwhile, DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre, who had downplayed the need for a specific plan to counter Guirassy, was left to rue the decision.

Group H Standings Take Shape

The victory lifts Guinea to nine points, consolidating their second-place position and keeping them on course for qualification.

DR Congo, already qualified with 12 points, will need to regroup as they face Ethiopia on Tuesday in their final group match.

For Guinea, the result is a confidence boost as they edge closer to securing their spot in Morocco for the 2025 AFCON, while DR Congo will look to bounce back and finish their campaign on a high note
