Claude Le Roy, the seasoned French football coach, shared an amusing story about how he acquired the affectionate nickname “the White Wizard.” According to his explanations, he received this nickname during his first press conference in Cameroon.
During the press conference, Le Roy was asked about how he planned to deal with the issue of fetishists. In response, he said, “I am asked: ‘How are you going to resolve the problem of fetishists?’ I explain that if there are such strong people, they should take charge of the team.” He continued by stating, “The first true sorcerer in the history of humanity is Merlin the enchanter, in the forest of Brocéliande. He is Breton like me. You can imagine that I cannot be afraid of a sorcerer or a marabout.”
From that moment on, Le Roy was playfully dubbed “the White Wizard” as a nod to his humorous and fearless response to the question about fetishists. The nickname stuck, and it seems that the coach took it in good spirits. Over time, it even evolved to “the Blonde Wizard,” adding a touch of humor and lightheartedness to his coaching persona.
