Amiens SC head coach Omar Daf has spoken candidly about his name being linked to the vacant position as head coach of Senegal’s national football team. Despite his current focus on the upcoming clash with AC Ajaccio, the Senegalese tactician has not ruled out the possibility of succeeding Aliou Cissé, whose departure from the national team has left a significant gap.
Daf, who has impressed during his time with the French second-tier side, admitted that being considered for the role of Senegal coach was an honor.
“It’s always nice when your name is mentioned and when there are requests; it’s rewarding,” the Dakar-born coach said on Thursday.
However, he was quick to emphasize that his primary focus remains with Amiens. “Right now, I’m focused on preparing for the match against Ajaccio and securing the three points. All my energy is directed towards that.”
A Proud Moment for Omar Daf
While Daf refrained from elaborating on any ongoing discussions, his pride was evident. As a former Senegal international with over 50 caps for the national team, the opportunity to coach his country’s side would be a significant milestone in his career.
His potential move comes at a time when Senegal has already qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the Senegalese Football Federation is keen to finalize a long-term replacement for Cissé, whose tenure ended earlier this year.
Daf’s current contract with Amiens is set to expire next June, making the timing of the Senegal offer particularly intriguing.
Although nothing is confirmed, the Senegalese Football Federation appears eager to make a swift appointment, given the pressing need to prepare for the upcoming AFCON tournament.
Senegal’s National Team in Transition
The departure of interim coach Pape Thiaw, who stepped in after Cissé’s exit, signals a transition period for the Senegalese national team.
With AFCON qualification already secured, the focus now shifts to assembling a capable squad and coaching staff that can lead the Lions of Teranga to success in 2025
. Omar Daf, with his extensive playing experience and growing reputation as a manager, appears to be a strong contender for the job.
Despite his links to the national role, Daf remains committed to his duties at Amiens SC for the time being.
His side, which plays in Ligue 2, has seen steady improvement under his leadership, and Daf appears determined to end his tenure on a high note should he choose to depart.
Whether or not he remains in Picardy after this season remains uncertain, but his growing reputation continues to make him an attractive candidate for higher-profile positions.
As the speculation surrounding his future intensifies, one thing remains clear: Omar Daf’s managerial career is on an upward trajectory, and the prospect of leading Senegal’s national team could soon become a reality.
