Serhou Guirassy shines at Dortmund: A boost for Guinea’s AFCON qualifiers
Serhou Guirassy’s seamless transition into life at Borussia Dortmund has brought welcome news for Guinea’s national team, as they look to revive their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign. The Guinean international striker has hit the ground running with Dortmund, delivering a series of impressive performances since his arrival from VfB Stuttgart.
At 28, Guirassy is playing at the highest level of his career, and the demands of competing for a major European club have only spurred him on.
His recent form has offered a glimmer of hope for the Syli National, who are yet to secure any points in their qualifying group for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Guirassy’s challenge was significant—joining a club with the stature of Borussia Dortmund comes with immense pressure. Yet, the forward has quickly established himself as a crucial player in the team, with his goal-scoring prowess speaking volumes.
Six Goals in Five Matches for Dortmund
Guirassy, who joined Dortmund during the summer transfer window, wasted no time making an impact. Despite an early injury setback, the former Stade Rennais star quickly returned to full fitness, and his performances since then have been nothing short of sensational.
In just five appearances for Borussia Dortmund, Guirassy has found the back of the net six times. Even more impressively, the striker has scored five goals in his last four outings. His standout moment came during Dortmund’s dominant 7-1 victory over Celtic in the Champions League, where he netted a brace.
This prolific form is a continuation of his remarkable season with VfB Stuttgart, where he recorded 30 goals and three assists in 30 matches. It’s clear that Guirassy has carried this momentum into his new chapter at Dortmund, becoming a key figure at the Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund Coach Impressed by Guirassy’s Impact
Guirassy’s immediate success at Dortmund has not gone unnoticed by his coach, Nuri Sahin. The Turkish tactician has been quick to praise the Guinean forward’s contributions, particularly following Guirassy’s two-goal performance in a 4-2 Bundesliga win over Bochum.
“It’s for nights like this that we signed him,” said Sahin after the match. “I only wish he could have been on the pitch from the very first game of the season.”
Guinea’s AFCON Hopes Rest on Guirassy
As Guirassy thrives in Germany, Guinea will be looking to capitalize on his red-hot form for their upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
The Syli National is currently in a precarious position, having lost both of their opening matches in Group H against DR Congo and Tanzania.
With four games remaining, Guinea’s qualification hopes are hanging in the balance.
Michel Dussuyer has been brought back as head coach to steer Guinea through this critical phase, and Guirassy’s return to full fitness comes at the perfect time.
The forward missed Guinea’s last international matches due to injury, but his current form makes him a crucial asset as the team prepares to face Ethiopia in back-to-back fixtures in October.
The first match will take place on October 12 at 4 p.m. GMT at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpé, with the return leg scheduled for October 15 at 7 p.m. GMT.
Guinea, desperate for points, will be counting on Guirassy to lead their charge in both encounters as they fight to secure a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
