Former Burkinabe international Jonathan Pitroipa has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Burkinabe Football Federation (FBF).
The ex-winger for Burkina Faso, boasting 82 caps and 19 goals, submitted his candidacy for the FBF presidential elections on Wednesday.
Pitroipa, a key player in Burkina Faso’s journey to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final, visited the National Technical Centre (CTN), which serves as the headquarters for the federation, accompanied by a group of supporters.
“Yes, it is true that I have submitted my candidacy for the presidency of the Burkina Faso Federation,” Pitroipa confirmed to Africa Foot United.
At 38 years old, the former Rennes player is venturing into football administration, setting the stage for a contest against two notable figures from the military, Colonel Ali Guissou and retired Colonel-Major Oumarou Sawadogo.
Colonel Ali Guissou, currently the president of AS Douanes, and retired Colonel-Major Oumarou Sawadogo, recently endorsed by the USFA club in the presence of outgoing FBF president Lazare Banssé and his predecessor Sita Sangaré, are considered strong contenders.
Sawadogo, in particular, is seen as the frontrunner due to his significant backing from influential figures in Burkinabe football.
Pitroipa, despite his illustrious playing career and popularity, is perceived by some analysts, such as Romain Molina, as an underdog in this race.
However, his candidacy brings a fresh perspective to the federation, appealing to those who seek change and innovation within the organization.
The FBF presidential election is set for August 31. Once all candidacies are submitted, the electoral commission will commence the process of analyzing and validating the various applications.
This scrutiny ensures that all candidates meet the necessary criteria to run for the prestigious position.
Jonathan Pitroipa’s foray into football administration marks a significant shift from his playing days.
He retired from professional football in February 2021 after a remarkable career spanning over 400 matches, during which he scored 73 goals and provided 85 assists.
Since July 2021, Pitroipa has been playing with the amateur club Espérance Chartres de Bretagne in France’s regional leagues.
As he transitions from player to administrator, Pitroipa brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the sport.
His vision for the FBF likely includes leveraging his international exposure and professional experience to elevate Burkinabe football on both the African and global stages.
The announcement of his candidacy has sparked enthusiasm among his supporters and the wider football community in Burkina Faso.
His commitment to the sport and his nation is evident, and his journey from the pitch to the boardroom will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Pitroipa as he campaigns for the presidency, seeking to convince the electorate of his ability to lead the FBF towards a brighter future.
The election outcome will determine if this beloved football icon can translate his on-field success into effective governance and transformative leadership for Burkinabe football.

L’ancien international reste cependant un simple outsider vu les soutiens d’un autre prétendant, le colonel-major Oumarou Sawadogo
