Vincent Labrune remains steadfast amid the ongoing controversy over his decision to retire the No. 21 jersey in honor of Souleymane Diawara at Olympique de Marseille. Despite facing criticism for this move, Labrune stands by his decision.
Diawara’s tenure at Marseille coincided with a successful period for the club, including a league title, six trophies, and a quarter-final appearance in the Champions League. For Labrune, retiring Diawara’s number was a fitting tribute to this golden era under the Louis-Dreyfus ownership.
Speaking to La Provence, Labrune stated, “His arrival at the club corresponds to the champion title, the six trophies won, the quarter-final of the Champions League. It is the symbol of the most beautiful period of the Louis-Dreyfus years. The fact that he was at the end of his contract gave me the opportunity to retire his number. I accept this choice, I find it normal and legitimate.”
While the decision has drawn criticism from some former players, it has also found support, notably from Basile Boli, a Marseille legend.
