Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian football federation (Fécafoot), has responded to allegations of match-fixing after being summoned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). His lawyer, Antoine Vey, has vehemently defended Eto’o against the accusations.
Amidst the ongoing investigation into the alleged match-fixing scandal, Eto’o and his associate Valentin Nkwain, president of Victoria United club, were called upon by CAF to provide explanations regarding their involvement, as revealed in an audio recording.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Antoine Vey refuted any claims of Eto’o’s complicity in favoritism or corruption.
He emphasized that Eto’o’s remarks in the audio recording were misconstrued and taken out of context.
“Mr. Eto’o does not admit to having participated in a conversation in which he obviously talked about corruption.
If you listen to the audio, he’s trying to reassure a club president about some issues he’s having; he says the problem will be resolved, but he doesn’t say it was by illegal means or anything like that,” Vey asserted.
The lawyer’s statement underscores Eto’o’s position that he was merely addressing concerns raised by the club president and offering reassurance without implying any wrongdoing.
Eto’o maintains his innocence and denies any involvement in activities that undermine the integrity of the sport.
As the CAF investigation progresses, Eto’o and his legal team are confident that the evidence will exonerate him from the allegations.
The outcome of the probe will be eagerly awaited by football enthusiasts and stakeholders across the continent.
