President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has confirmed that preparations are already underway for the Super Eagles’ upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification mini-tournament, set to take place in Morocco this November.
Gusau assured that the federation is fully committed to ensuring Nigeria secures Africa’s sole ticket to the intercontinental playoffs.
South Africa clinched the automatic qualification spot from Group C after defeating Rwanda 3–0 in their final group match, leaving Nigeria just one point short despite a dominant 4–0 win over Benin in their own final fixture.
The Super Eagles will now face Gabon in the semifinal of the playoff stage on November 13.
Victory in that tie would see them advance to a decisive clash against either Cameroon or DR Congo for a place in the intercontinental playoffs.
Speaking on the team’s mindset and recent displays, Gusau praised the players’ renewed sense of focus and determination, especially in their recent games against Lesotho and Benin.
“We are aware of the countries we’re going to play with and the venue. We have already started preparation for that, but the most important thing is the level of commitment and zeal from the players,” Gusau said.
He added, “They now realise that going to the World Cup is very important — not just for Nigerians, but for their own careers. When you look at the spirit they showed in our last two matches, these guys are very ready to be at the World Cup, so I don’t have any element of doubt.”
