2026 World Cup qualifiers: Mali’s expected squad announcement

2026 World Cup qualifiers: Mali’s expected squad announcement

Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet is set to unveil his squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where the Eagles will take on Madagascar and Comoros in Morocco. As they look to strengthen their position in the qualifying campaign, Saintfiet is expected to rely on his core group of experienced players.

Key Players Expected to Feature

Despite struggling for game time at Tottenham Hotspur, Yves Bissouma is likely to use this international break as an opportunity to regain form and confidence.

The Malian midfielder has made six appearances this season without scoring, and the national team setup could offer him a platform to rediscover his rhythm. Meanwhile, Antalyaspor forward Moussa Djenepo is also expected to receive a call-up.

In goal, Djigui Diarra, who has been in fine form for Tanzanian club Young Africans, is set to retain his spot as the first-choice goalkeeper.

He will likely be joined by regulars such as Sikou Niakhaté, Moussa Diarra, Cheikh Konaté, and Fady Coulibaly in the squad.

Midfield Selection Challenges

Mali’s midfield presents a selection headache for Saintfiet, given the strong performances of several candidates at club level. Mamadou Sangare, Malick Yalcouye, Djaoui Cissé, Soumaila Diabaté, and Mahamadou Doumbia have all been in impressive form, making competition for places fierce. However, familiar names such as Fady Coulibaly, Ibrahima Sissoko, Mohamed Camara, and Aliou Dieng remain frontrunners for selection.

Potential Returns and New Call-Ups

Among the notable returns, Massadio Haidara could make his comeback to the national team, having played a role in Stade Brestois’ first-ever UEFA Champions League campaign.

Additionally, right-back Woyo Coulibaly, despite his club’s struggles in the English Premier League, is expected to receive his first call-up for Mali. The Leicester City defender has delivered strong performances at club level, making him a likely addition to the squad.

According to reports in the Malian press, the squad will convene on March 17 as preparations begin for the crucial qualifiers.
