Mali’s hopes of securing an automatic qualification spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a hit on Monday afternoon after they were held to a goalless draw by the Central African Republic at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Morocco.
The West African side, needing a win to keep their fate in their own hands, failed to break down their opponents, leaving them vulnerable to the results of other teams in Group I.
Mali now sits third in the standings with nine points from six matches, while the Central African Republic remains in fifth place with five points.
The outcome of this fixture could have significant implications for the group standings, especially for Ghana. The Black Stars, who have played one game fewer than Mali, currently lead the group with 12 points.
A victory against Madagascar later on Monday would allow them to extend their advantage, while any dropped points from Comoros in their match against Chad could further solidify Ghana’s position.
With just two rounds remaining in the qualifiers, Mali’s path to World Cup qualification has become more uncertain, as they may now need favourable results elsewhere to stay in contention.
