Cape Verde has temporarily moved to the top of Group D in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a 1-0 victory over Mauritius on Thursday.
The win takes Cape Verde to ten points after five matches, one point ahead of Cameroon, who has also played five games.
Libya, with seven points from four matches, is set to face Angola later in the day, with a chance to close the gap.
Yannick Semedo was the hero for Cape Verde, scoring the decisive goal in the 84th minute to secure the much-needed victory for the island nation.
Despite Mauritius putting up a strong defensive display, Cape Verde broke through late in the game to claim all three points.
With this crucial win, Cape Verde remains firmly in the race for World Cup qualification. Their next challenge will be an away match against Angola on Tuesday, March 27, 2025.
A positive result in that encounter will be vital in keeping their qualification hopes alive as they look to maintain their position at the top of the group.
