MetLife Stadium update

Preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are accelerating in the United States, with natural grass now officially installed at MetLife Stadium, temporarily renamed New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament.

The venue is set to host one of the most highly anticipated group-stage fixtures, Morocco vs Brazil, scheduled for June 13.

Normally used for NFL games on artificial turf, the stadium underwent significant modifications to meet FIFA requirements. Approximately 600 rolls of natural grass, grown in North Carolina, were transported and laid across the pitch on a 45-centimetre sand base designed to improve drainage and stability.

The playing surface also features dedicated ventilation and irrigation systems to maintain optimal conditions throughout the tournament, despite the stadium not having a retractable roof. On-site technicians used a specialised machine described as a “giant sewing machine” to connect the grass panels seamlessly.

The stadium is expected to host eight matches during the tournament, including the final on July 19.

Matches scheduled at New York New Jersey Stadium

June 13 – Morocco vs Brazil (Group C)
June 16 – France vs Senegal
June 22 – Norway vs Senegal
June 25 – Ecuador vs Germany
June 27 – Panama vs England
June 30 – Round of 16
July 5 – Quarterfinals
July 19 – Final

The Morocco vs Brazil fixture is already being billed as one of the standout matches of the group stage, with both teams expected to draw global attention in a stadium that will play a central role in the tournament.

Morocco have also confirmed their base camp plans, with the national team set to stay at the Pingry School in New Jersey throughout the competition.
