2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Christianah Uzoma vows Nigeria U20s will bounce back from Spain loss

Nigeria U20 captain Christianah Uzoma has urged her teammates to remain positive and fight on as the Falconets look to bounce back from their disappointing start at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Uzoma’s rallying call comes after Nigeria suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F encounter on Monday, leaving the West Africans needing a response in their second group game.

Despite the setback, the captain remains confident the Falconets can recover and put themselves in contention for progression.

“We can’t give up. We will come back in the next game, and we believe we are going to win,” she told the media.

Uzoma demands fightback

Nigeria were punished by Spain’s efficiency in front of goal, with Marisa Garcia breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute after a goalmouth scramble.

The Falconets struggled to find a way back into the contest and were eventually dealt another blow when Alba Cerrato doubled Spain’s advantage with 17 minutes remaining.

Uzoma, however, believes the result should not derail Nigeria’s campaign and has taken responsibility for keeping the squad focused ahead of their next challenge.

“As the captain, I will tell my teammates not to give up. We will keep fighting until the end.”

China clash offers immediate response

The Falconets now have little time to dwell on their opening defeat, with China PR standing between them and their first points of the tournament.

Nigeria will face the Asian side on Thursday at Arena Sosnowiec, knowing a positive result could revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The encounter will also provide Uzoma and her teammates with an opportunity to demonstrate the resilience that has traditionally characterised Nigeria’s performances at the global youth tournament.
