2025 WAFU-A U17: Mali coach Demba Traoré praises team spirit after securing semi-final spot
Mali advanced to the semi-finals of the UFOA-A U17 qualifying tournament after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Gambia on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Mamadou Konaté Stadium in Bamako.
The result was enough to send the Aiglonnets through to the last four, and head coach Demba Mamadou Traoré expressed his satisfaction with both the performance and resilience shown by his young side.
It was a tough match for my youngsters. Our opponents needed the win and put us under pressure from the first half. In the second half, they surprised us with a goal, but the kids showed great character to come back, Traoré said after the match.
Despite the physical and tactical intensity of the contest, Mali demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude, particularly in the closing stages when Gambia pushed forward relentlessly in search of a winner.
Traoré highlighted that his players’ ability to stay composed under pressure was a key factor in earning the crucial point that ensured their progression.
The coach also took the opportunity to commend the supporters, acknowledging the important role they played throughout the tournament so far.
The public was always there for this team, he said. Their encouragement means a lot to these boys. The energy from the stands truly makes a difference.
Mali’s campaign in the competition has been defined by solid teamwork, quick transitions, and an impressive collective spirit, but Traoré reminded fans that his squad is still at the beginning of its development cycle.
He urged supporters to remain patient with the team as they continue to gain experience at international level.
This is the very first competition for these young players, and they need time to adapt, he said, calling for greater understanding from the Malian football community.
The coach’s remarks reflect a broader vision of building a strong foundation for the future of Malian football, focusing not only on immediate results but also on long-term growth and development.
As Mali prepare for the semi-finals, Traoré’s men will be aiming to maintain their unbeaten run and continue showing the maturity and fighting spirit that have characterised their performances so far.
