2025 U17 World Cup: Mali advance to round of 32 after overcoming Saudi Arabia
Mali sealed their qualification for the Round of 32 at the U17 World Cup in Qatar after defeating Saudi Arabia 2-0 in their final Group L match at the Aspire Zone in Doha on Tuesday, 11 November.
The young Eagles began the encounter with high intensity but were wasteful in front of goal throughout the first half.
Despite dominating possession and creating several promising chances, their forwards lacked composure in the final third.
Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, remained compact and disciplined, closing down spaces to disrupt Mali’s rhythm and frustrate their opponents.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides unable to find the breakthrough.
After the restart, Mali continued to push forward but initially found themselves matched by a well-organised Saudi defence.
The breakthrough finally came in the 60th minute when Ndjicoura Bomba latched onto a precise pass from Mohamed Traoré and calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper to give Mali a deserved lead.
The goal boosted Mali’s confidence, and just six minutes later, they doubled their advantage.
Ibrahim Diakité, who delivered a commanding performance throughout the match, capitalised on a clever assist from Seydou Dembélé to make it 2-0.
The Saudis attempted to respond by pushing higher up the pitch, but their attacking efforts left them exposed at the back, allowing Mali to control the game comfortably in the closing stages.
Saudi Arabia’s late attempts to reduce the deficit proved futile as Mali maintained their structure and composure to see out the victory.
The result ensured Mali’s progression to the knockout stages, rewarding their resilience and ability to recover from a slow first half.
The win also reflected Mali’s growing defensive maturity, as they limited Saudi Arabia to few clear opportunities and displayed effective game management once in front.
With this victory, Mali secured top spot in Group L and confirmed their presence among the tournament’s last 32.
In the group’s other fixture, Austria earned a convincing 4-1 win over New Zealand, joining Mali in the next round.
Mali’s disciplined performance and second-half improvement underlined their credentials as one of Africa’s strongest representatives in the competition, as they now turn their attention to the challenges awaiting in the knockout phase.
