2025 FIFA U20 World Cup: South Africa begin group campaign with 2-1 defeat to France
South Africa’s U20 national team endured a frustrating start to the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, losing 2-1 to France’s U20 side in a Group E encounter.
In the game played at Estadio El Teniente, France took the lead in the 25th minute when Anthony Bermont pounced on a rebound to break the deadlock.
Amajita responded swiftly, however, as Jody Ah Sheen converted from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute after Kutlwano Letlhaku was fouled in the box.
The French side continued to press, with Lucas Michal denied twice before half-time by a resolute South African defence. Goalkeeper Fletcher Smyth-Lowe was also called into action in stoppage time, pulling off a crucial save to keep the score level at the break.
France controlled much of the second half, with Michal missing early chances before finally finding the net in the 79th minute to seal victory. South Africa had opportunities of their own, with Shakeel April and Siviwe Magidigidi coming close, but they failed to capitalise.
Despite a spirited performance, Amajita were left to rue missed chances as France walked away with all three points.
For South Africa, the team must regroup and address its shortcomings in training before its next group match against New Caledonia on Friday, October 3.
