2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria suffer 1-0 defeat to France in second group match

Nigeria’s Flamingos suffered a second consecutive defeat at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, losing 1–0 to France in their Group D clash on Wednesday night at the Football Academy Mohammed VI in Morocco.

After a heavy 4–1 loss to Canada in their opening fixture, Nigeria were determined to respond with a stronger performance. However, their hopes were dashed late in the game when French substitute Maïssa Fathallah struck in the 81st minute to hand Les Bleuettes all three points.

Despite the back-to-back defeats, Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage are not completely over. With the newly expanded format of 24 teams, the four best third-placed teams across all groups will also qualify for the Round of 16.

To stand a chance, the Flamingos must secure a convincing victory against Samoa in their final group game. A win alone may not be enough; they must also significantly improve their goal difference to boost their chances of advancing.

Nigeria currently sit bottom of the group with no points, while France maintain a perfect record with two wins from two matches. Group leaders Canada also have six points after thrashing Samoa 6–0 to book their place in the knockout stage.

For Bankole Olowookere’s side, it all comes down to their next match. Anything short of a win will end their campaign in Morocco.
