Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club suffered a 2-0 defeat to English side Manchester City in their opening match at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The Moroccan outfit is one of four clubs representing Africa at this year’s expanded Club World Cup in the United States of America.
Today, Wydad Athletic Club began their campaign in Group G, hoping to cause an upset against Pep Guardiola’s well-drilled Manchester City side.
On the matchday, the English Premier League side dominated the contest in most parts of the game.
Just two minutes into the first half, Manchester City equalised through Phil Foden to open the scoring.
He fired a rebound into the left corner after pouncing on a loose ball in the Wydad SC area.
Despite defending well in the remainder of the first half, Wydad conceded a second goal in the 42nd minute.
This time around, Phil Foden turned the provider as he assisted Jeremy Doku to get his name on the scoresheet.
Down by two goals at halftime, Wydad AC had a mountain to climb in the second half.
Although the team put up a fight after recess, they could not find a way back and suffered a 2-0 defeat at full time.
The Moroccans will now prepare for their next match against Juventus on Sunday, June 22.
