2025 Arab Cup: Achraf Abada emerges as standout performer in Algeria’s stalemate with Sudan

Achraf Abada delivered a commanding display as Algeria A’ held Sudan to a goalless draw in their opening match of the 2025 Arab Cup, making the most of a rare opportunity to start under coach Madjid Bougherra.

The Olympique de Chlef defender has seen limited action in recent international competitions.

During CHAN 2024, he featured for only eight minutes as Bougherra opted for the established central defensive pairing of Chouaib Ghezala and Zineddine Belaïlet.

Their absence for this tournament, however, offered Abada a chance to step into the spotlight — a chance he seized with authority.

Lining up alongside Abdelkader Bedrane, Abada helped forge a disciplined and resilient back line.

Their task became significantly tougher early in the second half when Adam Ounas was shown a red card, forcing Algeria to play with ten men.

Despite Sudan’s increased pressure, the defensive duo succeeded in shielding goalkeeper Farid Chaal, preserving a clean sheet that owed much to Abada’s composure and anticipation.

The Touggourt-born defender stood out for his consistency in duels and his exceptional reading of the game, recording nine clearances as Sudan pushed forward.

His positioning repeatedly cut off dangerous passages of play, while his calm presence instilled assurance in the Algerian back line.

For a player with limited international experience, it was a performance that resonated strongly among observers and teammates alike.

Abada’s showing has already prompted praise, marking him as one of Algeria’s early revelations in the competition.

His emergence provides Bougherra with a timely boost as the squad navigates a demanding group stage and looks to build momentum after a frustrating opening draw.

With additional fixtures still ahead, Abada now faces the test of sustaining this level of influence.

If he can maintain the form displayed against Sudan, he may play a pivotal role in Algeria’s push to advance deep into the tournament and strengthen his standing within the national setup.
