Botswana secured their second-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance with a 1-1 draw against Egypt at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium on Tuesday, sealing qualification for Morocco 2025.
The draw means Egypt ended the series unbeaten in Group C but allowed Botswana to finish second, advancing to their first AFCON since 2012.
The match took an early twist when Botswana’s Omaatla Kebatho scored in the eighth minute, finishing a precise cross from Kabelo Seakanyeng into the top right corner.
Egypt quickly responded, with Trezeguet equalizing in the 15th minute with a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box.
Both sides had chances before halftime, but the score remained 1-1.
Egypt dominated possession in the second half and created several chances, but Botswana’s defense, led by goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, held firm.
Phoko made crucial saves to deny Omar Marmoush and Ibrahim Adel.
With a draw enough for qualification, Botswana defended resolutely, surviving seven minutes of added time to secure a historic result.
