Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has praised Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, declaring him the best player in Africa and predicting he will be named African Player of the Year at the upcoming 2024 CAF Awards ceremony on December 16.
Troost-Ekong, who currently plays in Saudi Arabia, highlighted Lookman’s exceptional performances for Nigeria during the last Africa Cup of Nations.
Lookman has been in remarkable form this season, scoring 11 goals in 19 appearances and leading Atalanta to their first major title in 61 years with a hat-trick in the final.
Troost-Ekong expressed his admiration for the 27-year-old striker, stating, “He’s on fire now and a lot of promise is coming through. This season he’s been something else.”
The captain emphasized Lookman’s importance to the national team, asserting, “I would say he’s arguably our best player and arguably the best player in Africa right now. On December 16, there will be the [African Player of the Year] ceremony and I’m sure he’s going to win it.
“Everybody saw the hat trick in the Europa League final and then there were a lot of rumours about big clubs which I know to be true, but Atalanta weren’t ready for him to go.”
