South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns’ shot-stopper, Ronwen Williams, has been named the CAF Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year at the prestigious 2024 CAF Awards.

Williams earned the accolade following a phenomenal year that saw him excel on multiple fronts, both internationally with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and domestically with his club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

As the captain of South Africa, Williams played a pivotal role in securing a bronze medal at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023. His incredible penalty-saving heroics were instrumental in South Africa’s victories over Morocco in the Round of 16, Cape Verde in the quarterfinals, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the third-place playoff.

In addition to his AFCON achievements, Williams guided Bafana Bafana to qualification for the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, further solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers.

At the club level, the 32-year-old was a defensive stalwart for Mamelodi Sundowns during their triumphant campaign in the South African Premiership.

His leadership between the posts helped the Brazilians set a joint-record low of just 11 goals conceded across 30 games, culminating in their eighth consecutive domestic league title.

Williams’ outstanding performances also earned him a nomination for FIFA’s Best Goalkeeper award in 2024, further highlighting his global impact and exceptional consistency.
