Algeria Begin World Cup Preparations with Convincing Win Over Armenia
Algeria kicked off their World Cup preparations in impressive fashion on Saturday, defeating Armenia 3-1 in a friendly match held in Sion, Switzerland. Under the guidance of coach Vahid Halilhodzic, the Fennecs demonstrated resilience and skill despite concerns over a demanding training schedule earlier in the week in Sidi Moussa.
The visitors wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Belkacem opening the scoring early by heading in from a corner. The highlight of the first half came when Nabil Ghilas fired a spectacular shot beneath the Armenian goalkeeper’s bar, doubling Algeria’s lead. Before the break, striker Islam Slimani netted his 10th international goal, further cementing the team’s control.
Armenia managed to pull one back in the second half, but the goal proved merely symbolic as Algeria maintained their composure and continued to build confidence ahead of the World Cup kickoff in just 11 days.
The team’s next friendly is scheduled for June 4, when they will face Romania in Geneva — a vital test as they prepare for the global tournament.
