Riyad Mahrez Included in Algeria’s World Cup Training Camp
Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez has been named in Algeria’s training camp ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The 23-year-old, who helped Leicester secure promotion to the Premier League, will join the Algerian national team for a 20-day training camp beginning on May 10 at the Sidi Moussa training center.
Algerian head coach Vahid Halilhodzic has included Mahrez in a provisional squad of approximately thirty players, acknowledging his impressive form this season. With 9 goals and 9 assists across all competitions, including his time at Le Havre before joining Leicester, Mahrez has proven to be a key player for his club.
Mahrez is set to depart for Algeria on May 8, ahead of the camp which will feature friendly matches as part of the team’s preparation for the World Cup. However, only 23 players will make the final cut for Algeria’s upcoming friendly against Armenia in Sion on May 31. This will be followed by a match against Romania in Geneva on June 4, before the squad departs for Brazil on June 7.
Mahrez’s inclusion marks an exciting moment in his career as he looks to represent Algeria on football’s biggest stage, with the Fennecs aiming for a strong World Cup performance in Brazil.
