Cape Verde’s hopes of reaching the World Cup were dashed after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld FIFA’s decision to sanction the team for fielding an ineligible player during a crucial match against Tunisia.
The CAS ruling confirmed FIFA’s decision to overturn Cape Verde’s victory over Tunisia on September 7, 2013, due to the use of a suspended player. As a result, Tunisia topped Group B of the second round of African qualifying, earning them a spot in the World Cup qualifying playoffs against Cameroon.
Despite Tunisia’s advancement to the playoffs, they were ultimately eliminated by Cameroon, with the Indomitable Lions securing their place in the World Cup after a 4-1 victory in the return leg.
With this decision, Cape Verde’s dreams of competing in the World Cup in Brazil were dashed, while Cameroon sealed their qualification for the tournament, scheduled to take place from June 12 to July 13.
