German Chancellor Angela Merkel is known for her support of the Nationalmannschaft during major tournaments. She has confirmed her attendance at Germany’s opening match of the 2014 World Cup against Portugal on June 16 in Salvador.

“I will be able to attend the first match of the German team in the group stage, and I wish Joachim Löw and his team the best to continue with six more matches,” Merkel stated in an interview with the regional daily Leipziger Volkszeitung on Tuesday.
