Al-Jazeera Sports TV network, owned by Qatari interests, plans to take legal action against Egyptian state television for broadcasting the first leg match between Ghana and Egypt, a right exclusive to Al-Jazeera. Egyptian television transmitted the match on two local channels without prior announcement or approval from Al-Jazeera. Tensions are rising between the Qatari channel and the Egyptian government, and Al-Jazeera has announced its intention to sue Egyptian television for violating its broadcasting rights. In response, Egyptian Radio Television Union (ERTU) has accused Al-Jazeera of not respecting the “financial rights of Egyptian TV” and demanded LE 200 million, claiming the Qatari channel used Egyptian state vehicles to cover a pro-Morsi demonstration for 41 days at the protest camp in Rabaa. This legal dispute is part of broader political tensions between Egyptian authorities and Al-Jazeera over accusations of biased and partisan coverage in favor of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, his supporters, and the Muslim Brotherhood.
