Zongo backs Orlando Pirates talent Padime to follow Mofokeng’s path

Former dribbling wizard Masibusane Zongo believes Orlando Pirates youngster Mpho ‘Phopho’ Padime has the ability to move overseas and follow in the footsteps of Relebohile Mofokeng.

Padime made his senior debut for Pirates during Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final second leg against Golden Arrows at the Orlando Amstel Arena. The Soweto club won 3-0 on the night to secure a 4-0 aggregate victory and book their place in the final.

Although Padime was on the pitch for only eight minutes, his display was enough to attract attention. The youngster showed confidence and flair during his brief appearance, leaving supporters wanting to see more from him.

Zongo, who built his own reputation as an entertaining and skilful dribbler, was particularly impressed by what he saw.

“I’m speechless when it comes to that boy’s performance. South Africa has seen nothing yet from him. I don’t think he will be playing in the PSL for too long,” Zongo told KickOff.

“He is going overseas; he is following in Rele’s footsteps. He is very good, that boy. I hope coach Ouaddou doesn’t restrict him too much.”

Padime has already been described by The Ghost as the new Relebohile Mofokeng, another highly rated Pirates player who has emerged as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.

However, Zongo was careful to distinguish Padime from Mofokeng while making clear that he believes the new prospect has significant potential.

“He is not at Rele’s level yet, who is at his own level, but Padime is a very talented player. His confidence is what sets him apart from his peers, as we saw even in the DDC [DStv Diski Challenge] last season. He plays to his strengths. The coach should allow him to showcase his skills; that’s the only way he will grow,” added the former Platinum Stars star.

The comments come after Padime was given his first opportunity with the senior Pirates side in a decisive cup tie. His performance, despite its limited duration, has increased interest in whether he can earn further chances under coach Ouaddou.

Zongo’s assessment also places emphasis on the role of the coach in Padime’s development. While praising the player’s confidence and ability to play to his strengths, he warned against placing unnecessary restrictions on the youngster’s style.

Padime will now hope his cameo against Golden Arrows was enough to earn additional playing time when Pirates face Kruger United in the league at Mbombela Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 19:30.
