Zirkzee unconvinced over summer exit despite limited role at Man United
Joshua Zirkzee is not yet persuaded that his time at Manchester United will come to an end this summer, despite a difficult campaign that has seen him struggle for minutes and form at Old Trafford.
The Dutch striker arrived in 2024 from Bologna during Erik ten Hag’s tenure, with expectations that he would develop into a key attacking option.
However, his debut season has fallen short of those projections, with just 20 appearances in all competitions and only two goals to his name.
Zirkzee’s opportunities have been further restricted by increased competition in United’s forward line. The arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko have reshaped the club’s attacking hierarchy, leaving the Dutchman largely on the periphery. All three newcomers have made encouraging starts, pushing Zirkzee down the pecking order.
In the Premier League, his involvement has been particularly limited. Of his 18 appearances, only four have come as starts, spanning managerial spells under Ruben Amorim and interim boss Michael Carrick. Both have shown little inclination to rely heavily on him, raising questions about his long-term role at the club.
Speculation has naturally followed, with several clubs monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window. Everton are among the Premier League sides linked, while interest from Italy has reportedly emerged from Juventus and AC Milan, clubs familiar with his profile from his time in Serie A.
Despite the growing transfer noise, reports suggest Zirkzee and his representatives are “unconvinced” that a departure will materialise. The 24-year-old remains under contract until 2029, placing United in a strong position regarding his immediate future.
There is also an indication that the striker himself is not pushing for an exit. While he is believed to be open to opportunities should they arise, he is equally prepared to remain in Manchester and fight for his place, even if it means continuing in a reduced role.
