Zinedine Zidane’s return to the France set-up has already had a significant impact on television audiences, with the 1-1 Nations League draw against Italy attracting record figures for TF1.
The match, Zidane’s first appearance as France manager in front of supporters at Stade de France, was watched by 7.17 million people in France, according to figures from Mediametrie reported by TF1. The broadcast recorded a 41% audience share.
Viewership rose to 8.2 million at its peak, making it the most-watched Nations League match on TF1 in five years.
The figures underline the level of interest in France matches since Zidane took charge. TF1 had expected audiences to increase after the former manager returned to the spotlight and began leading the national team in the Nations League.
France’s first match under Zidane, a 1-0 victory against Turkiye, drew 6.82 million viewers on TF1. That game represented a 37.7% share of the market.
Three days ago, France recorded another 1-0 win against Belgium, watched by about 6.39 million people, with a 32.9% market share. The audience then increased again for the meeting with Italy at Stade de France.
The result against Italy extended France’s unbeaten start under Zidane, although the draw gave Belgium an opportunity to challenge for top spot in the group.
TF1 is now awaiting France’s next match against Belgium on Monday evening. It represents the channel’s final opportunity during the current international break to increase its viewing figures.
Belgium will be seeking to respond to its defeat in the first meeting between the sides and regain the group lead when the teams meet again at Stade de France.
