Uebert Angel, a Zimbabwean pastor of the Spirit Embassy Church, is reportedly suing a South African sports channel for $1.5 million over claims that he predicted Liverpool would win the Premier League this year. The dispute arose from an article published on the SuperSport website in December with the headline “A Zimbabwean prophet predicts that Liverpool will win the title.”
Angel denies ever making such predictions and argues that his reputation would be damaged if Liverpool does not win. His lawyers filed a complaint before a Harare court, stating that the allegation is defamatory and could harm his reputation as a spiritual leader and prophet.
Although Angel has denied making the alleged prophecy, reports suggest that he had previously expressed support for Liverpool, saying that he believed God was “destining them to glory days again.” Angel, known for his ministry sessions involving miracles, healings, and prophecies, has a significant following and is respected by religious, social, and political leaders worldwide.
Liverpool currently sits second in the Premier League standings, trailing behind Chelsea, after 29 matches out of 38. The English Premier League enjoys widespread popularity in southern Africa.
